EDL Graffiti Was Found On Burnt Down Muswell Hill Mosque

A fire at an Islamic centre is being treated as a possible terrorist incident after police said graffiti saying ‘EDL’ was left on the building walls.

The Met Police said the fire, which happened at the Al-Rahma Islamic Centre in Muswell Hill in the early hours on 5th of June, is being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman said the letters EDL (English Defence League) were sprayed on to the building (which was frequently visited by even children, women and non-Muslims).

MP Theresa Villiers for Chipping Barnet said: “This kind of hate crime is absolutely despicable. This is not just an attack on the Muslim community it is an attack on all of us and our values.”

The Met’s Counter Terrorism Command are investigating the cause of the fire, which brought together six fire engines and about 35 firefighters to tackle the blaze.

The Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) said Muslims are now living in fear of a “wave of attacks”.

The Chair said: “Muslims have been physically attacked, mosques burnt down, cemeteries vandalised and social media is full of anti-Muslim hatred and violent threats towards Muslims. More needs to be done to protect the Muslim community.”

There have been similar cases reported by the media about EDL initials being written on places after the tragic Woolwich murder in an attempt to target the Muslim community, such as the vandalism done in London late last month.
